How to Progress German Volume Training

The simplest GVT progression is a completion model. Keep the same working load until you can achieve the prescribed total work with consistent form, then increase weight and rebuild.

  • Keep the load fixed for all work sets.
  • Record reps for every set.
  • When you reach 10×10, raise load modestly.
  • Expect total reps to drop temporarily after the increase.

  • Keep most sets 1–3 reps from failure.
  • Progress load when all sets are strong and repeatable.

For upper-body lifts, a 2.5–5% load increase is often enough. Larger lower-body movements may tolerate 5–10%, but smaller jumps are usually easier to progress smoothly.

How Much Weekly Volume Does GVT Create?

Classic GVT can create a surprisingly large weekly set count. If you perform 10 direct sets for chest in one workout plus 3 accessory pressing sets, you may already be at 13 direct weekly chest sets before counting indirect work. Add another chest session and the volume escalates quickly.

Count sets per muscle—not just sets per exercise

Compound exercises overlap. Bench pressing trains chest directly while also involving triceps and anterior deltoids. Rows and pulldowns train back while also contributing to elbow-flexor work. Avoid treating every exercise as isolated when estimating recovery demands.

The 2026 resistance-training dose-response literature supports higher weekly volume for hypertrophy on average, but also shows diminishing returns. This is why a full GVT block should normally reduce accessory volume rather than pile ten-set exercises on top of an already high-volume bodybuilding routine.

Should GVT Sets Go to Failure?
