That research does not mean everyone should count every calorie forever. It supports the broader idea that observing behavior makes behavior easier to evaluate. For a lifter, a short period of structured tracking can answer questions that memory cannot answer reliably: Did protein actually average near the goal? Were weekend calories 30% higher than weekdays? Was the planned surplus present consistently, or did high and low days cancel each other out?
Evidence context: Self-monitoring is a behavior-change tool, not a moral score. The tracker should reduce uncertainty. If it increases anxiety, guilt or compulsive checking, the cost may outweigh the benefit and a less detailed approach may be more appropriate.

Carbohydrate and fat targets are often treated as rigid numbers even when the overall plan does not require that level of precision. Carbohydrate can be valuable for supporting high-quality resistance training, repeated hard sets and glycogen-demanding activity. Dietary fat supplies essential fatty acids and supports a nutrient-dense eating pattern. The appropriate split varies widely between people.
In this tracker, carbohydrate and fat receive lower weighting than calories and protein because the same calorie/protein target can often be achieved with different carb-to-fat distributions. That is a coaching simplification, not a claim that carbs or fats are unimportant. Athletes with very high training volumes, endurance work, specific performance goals or medically prescribed diets may need more precise carbohydrate or fat planning.
