Use maintenance periods strategically when they improve adherence or training quality. If your deficit is progressing well and fatigue is manageable, there may be no reason to interrupt it.

Refeeds and diet breaks are two forms of intermittent energy restriction: instead of remaining in a calorie deficit every single day until the end of a cut, calories are deliberately raised for a short period and then the deficit resumes. The idea is popular in bodybuilding, physique sport and general fat-loss coaching, but online explanations often overstate what the strategies can do.
The evidence supports a more useful view. Refeeds and diet breaks can be legitimate tools for organizing a fat-loss phase, but they are not required, and they do not bypass the basic need for an overall calorie deficit. Their value is most likely to come from improving training quality, dietary adherence, hunger management, maintenance practice and tolerance of a long diet. Some studies also suggest favorable effects on fat-free mass or resting metabolic rate, but findings are not uniform across populations and protocols.
A refeed day is a planned, short increase in energy intake during a calorie-restricted phase. In resistance-training practice, the increase is commonly produced by adding carbohydrate while protein stays relatively stable and dietary fat is kept moderate. Many people bring calories to approximately estimated maintenance for one day; some use two consecutive days. The defining feature is structure: you know the calorie target, you know the duration and you return to the normal plan afterward.
This differs from a “cheat day.” A cheat day is usually defined by permission rather than a nutrition target and may involve a very large, untracked surplus. That can erase much of the weekly deficit and may encourage an all-or-nothing relationship with food. A refeed is closer to a scheduled maintenance day than a reward for being “good.”
A diet break is a longer interruption of energy restriction in which calories are returned to roughly maintenance. Research protocols vary substantially. The MATADOR study used repeated two-week blocks at energy balance, while trials in resistance-trained adults have used one-week maintenance periods between blocks of restriction. In everyday physique practice, a 7–14 day diet break is common because it is long enough to practice maintenance eating and reduce the feeling of continuous restriction without turning the plan into an open-ended pause.
A diet break is not necessarily a vacation from nutrition habits. Protein, fruits and vegetables, meal structure, resistance training and normal daily activity can all remain consistent. The primary change is that energy intake rises toward maintenance.
Several short-term changes can occur when energy and carbohydrate intake rise. Muscle and liver glycogen can increase, particularly if the prior diet was lower in carbohydrate or training volume is high. Because glycogen is stored with water, body weight can rise quickly without a comparable increase in body fat. Food volume and intestinal contents can also increase.
Hunger and perceived diet fatigue may improve for some people. Training sessions may feel better when glycogen availability improves, particularly when the refeed is placed before or around demanding sessions. However, none of these effects means that a one-day refeed permanently restores thyroid function, leptin, testosterone or metabolic rate. Hormones respond dynamically to energy availability, body fat, sleep, stress and other inputs. The phrase “reset your metabolism” is therefore too strong.
Longer maintenance periods may have more practical scope to reduce the cumulative strain of restriction. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis found similar body-composition improvements between intermittent dieting with break periods and continuous energy restriction overall, while the compensatory reduction in resting metabolic rate was smaller with intermittent approaches. Importantly, the advantage appeared stronger in people with overweight or obesity than in resistance-trained participants, so claims should not be generalized across every lifter.
The literature uses different populations, calorie targets, durations and definitions, which is why apparently conflicting headlines are common. The most useful interpretation comes from reading the protocols and outcomes rather than asking whether diet breaks “work” in a yes-or-no sense.
Men with obesity alternated two-week energy-restriction blocks with two-week energy-balance blocks. The intermittent group achieved greater weight and fat loss in the per-protocol analysis and showed a smaller adaptive reduction in resting energy expenditure after body-composition adjustment.

Weekly refeeds are not a rule. If you are early in a moderate deficit, hunger is manageable, sleep is good, performance is stable and weight trend is moving as expected, adding refeeds may only complicate a plan that already works.
A longer maintenance period can be appealing after an extended cut, when food preoccupation, irritability, persistent hunger, poor sleep, training decline or simple diet fatigue are becoming difficult to manage. It is also useful when life temporarily makes precise dieting difficult: travel, holidays, exams, a major work project or a competition schedule may be better handled at maintenance rather than by repeatedly failing an aggressive deficit.
A diet break can also teach an underrated skill: maintenance. Many people can lose weight but struggle when the deficit ends because they have never practiced eating more while keeping structure. A deliberate maintenance phase lets you increase calories without abandoning normal eating habits.
Start with your best estimate of current maintenance calories. If you are eating 2,100 kcal in a deficit and your estimated maintenance is 2,600 kcal, a straightforward refeed is approximately 2,600 kcal—not 3,500 or 4,000 kcal. The purpose is to reduce or remove the deficit temporarily, not create the largest possible surplus.
Protein: keep daily protein similar to the rest of the cut. For resistance-trained people, adequate protein remains one of the most important controllable factors for preserving lean mass. Carbohydrate: use most of the added calories here when training performance and glycogen are priorities. Fat: keep it sufficient for food quality and enjoyment, but avoid combining a huge carbohydrate increase with a huge fat increase because that makes calorie overshoot easy.

5 days at 2,100 kcal + 2 days around 2,600 kcal. Weekly average ≈ 2,243 kcal/day. The weekly deficit is smaller, so expected fat-loss rate may slow slightly unless lower days are adjusted.
Move from 2,100 kcal to about 2,600 kcal for one full week, then reassess and resume the deficit. The calendar becomes longer because that week is not designed to produce meaningful fat loss.
Suppose an 80 kg resistance-trained person is dieting at 2,100 kcal with 170 g protein, 65 g fat and roughly 210 g carbohydrate. At an estimated 2,600 kcal maintenance refeed, protein could remain near 170 g, fat around 65–70 g, and the additional calories could primarily raise carbohydrate to roughly 325–345 g. These are examples, not universal prescriptions; food preferences, training volume and digestion matter.
Four weeks into a 15% deficit, weight trend is appropriate, hunger is manageable and strength is stable.

Best fit: a maintenance diet break may be more useful than forcing another aggressive week.Short-term scale gain is one of the main reasons people panic and abandon a well-planned refeed. More carbohydrate usually means more glycogen, and glycogen storage is accompanied by water. Sodium intake may also rise. There is often simply more food inside the digestive tract. For these reasons, a 0.5–2 kg increase in scale weight over a short period can occur without that amount being body fat.
To gain 1 kg of body fat requires a large cumulative energy surplus. A maintenance-calorie refeed by definition is not designed to create such a surplus. Use a 7-day average or other consistent trend measure and allow several normal deficit days before deciding that the strategy “caused fat gain.”
For FFMI-focused lifters, the central goal of a cut is usually to reduce fat while preserving as much fat-free mass as possible. The highest-value behaviors remain progressive or at least performance-focused resistance training, adequate protein, a sustainable calorie deficit, sufficient sleep and realistic expectations. A refeed may make a hard session better; a diet break may reduce cumulative fatigue; neither replaces those basics.

Maintenance calories may shift gradually as body mass changes, so use real-world weight trends rather than assuming an old maintenance estimate remains exact forever.
After several weeks of maintenance, it may be reasonable to calculate targets again. For a short one-week break, large recalculations are usually unnecessary unless activity, body weight or schedule changed substantially.
Refeeds and diet breaks can be psychologically helpful for some people and destabilizing for others. If planned higher-calorie days repeatedly trigger binge eating, guilt, compensatory fasting or compulsive exercise, the priority should not be refining the refeed formula. People with a current or previous eating disorder, pregnancy, diabetes or medications affected by meal intake, kidney disease, gastrointestinal conditions or medically supervised weight management should seek individualized guidance from an appropriately qualified professional.
Also consider whether continued fat loss is appropriate at all. Persistent loss of menstrual function, repeated injuries, major mood changes, severe fatigue, dizziness or other concerning symptoms deserve professional assessment rather than another diet tactic.
